Penembakan ini terjadi tak lama setelah AS diguncang beberapa penembakan massal lainnya dalam beberapa hari terakhir. Sebelumnya penembakan massal menewaskan 10 warga kulit hitam di bagian utara New York, 19 anak-anak dan dua guru di Texas, dan dua dokter, seorang resepsionis dan seorang pasien di Oklahom.
